School’s Out Time to Get Your Wisdom Teeth Out Too!

June 13, 2018

Young woman having wisdom teeth removedWhile dentists typically try to help patients keep their natural teeth in place, third molars may be the exception that makes the rule. Commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, this third set of large, back teeth erupt in the late teens and early twenties, and while they were biologically necessary in the past, improved oral health and diet make this final set of teeth unnecessary for the majority of patients. Unfortunately, many young people who need wisdom tooth extraction are still in school. That means the best time to schedule wisdom tooth removal is right now while school is out for the summer!

Reasons Wisdom Tooth Removal is Recommended

Many patients don’t understand why their wisdom teeth need to be removed, and in some cases, we don’t recommend extraction. The main reason we need to remove wisdom teeth is lack of space in the smile. Our ancient ancestors ate a coarse diet and performed little to no teeth cleaning, so by the late teens or early twenties, they had typically lost a number of teeth. For these early humans, wisdom teeth erupted were necessary to fill in gaps. Today, our improved diet and oral hygiene routines mean there simply isn’t room in the smile for an additional set of molars. When teeth erupt without adequate space, a number of adverse effects can occur, including:

  • Crowding that can make it difficult to clean teeth, change the way the bite fits together, and place excessive pressure on specific teeth
  • Teeth may shift out of alignment causing numerous oral health issues
  • Wisdom teeth may not be able to fully erupt, or their eruption could adversely impact surrounding teeth

How are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Wisdom teeth are typically removed through “pulling” or surgical extraction. Pulling teeth means the tooth has fully erupted from the gums. The procedure requires us to numb the area around the tooth. Then, we use clasping tools to hold the tooth and shift it back and forth until it breaks free from the gums and bone tissue. Surgical extraction means we need to cut into the soft tissue or bone to extract the tooth.
