Do you or your family member still have their wisdom teeth? While some people may never need them removed, most will need extraction to prevent serious oral health issues from occurring. At Altitude Oral and Facial Surgery, Dr. Brian Fangman, an experienced oral surgeon in Commerce City, is highly trained in even the most difficult cases of wisdom teeth extraction. Read on to learn more about the process and why it’s necessary!

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Get Removed?

In the past, humans needed these extra 4 teeth to chew tough meats, nuts, and other food items. However, thanks to evolution, these teeth are no longer needed. Most people only have enough room in their jaw for 28 teeth, which is why wisdom teeth cause issues like headaches, dental damage, and infections. Without getting your wisdom teeth removed, you may experience numerous issues, including:

  • The wisdom teeth can become impacted, failing to erupt properly and getting trapped beneath the gumline.
  • Wisdom teeth can often grow in crooked or misaligned, causing bite problems and even effecting the position of the rest of your smile.
  • Partial eruption can occur, which often leads to gum infection, swollen lymph nodes, and other uncomfortable symptoms.

The Right Time for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth get their name because they typically develop much later than the rest of your adult teeth. They will usually need removal between the ages of 17 and 25, but there are also some common signs and symptoms you can be on the lookout for:

  • Pain in the jaw and back corners of your gum tissue
  • Swelling in your gums, jaw, or cheeks
  • Severe bad breath or a lingering bad taste in your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your jaw fully
  • Discomfort while chewing

What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Extraction

After Dr. Fangman has taken X-Rays of your smile to see the exact position of your wisdom teeth, we will schedule your appointment. We have local anesthetic and IV sedation available, and we can choose the option that works best for you. Either way, we’ll ensure that you’re numb and comfortable before beginning. Next, Dr. Fangman will make a small incision around the wisdom tooth and remove it. He will minimize any bleeding with sutures, and then it’s over! It’s completely normal to experience soreness after the procedure, and you should eat a soft food diet for the first few days.

The Cost of Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Once we have determined that your wisdom teeth in Commerce City need to be removed, you’re probably going to wonder about the cost. However, because there are a wide range of factors that can influence the price of treatment, it’s difficult to provide you with a precise estimate. We will carefully examine your mouth and the number of teeth you need removed as well as their position. Your dental insurance may be able to partially cover the procedure, but this will vary from plan to plan. Our team is experienced in developing treatment plans that meet your needs and finances!
